Alexander's father was William Towers and his mother was Jane Fraser. His paternal grandparents were Michael Towers and Janet Mathie; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Helen Hamilton. He had three brothers and six sisters, named William, William, Archibald, Janet, Margaret, Janet, Helen, Mary and Jane. He was the third youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 84 in 1969 in Paisley.
