William's father was Archibald Thomson and his mother was Katrine Eaglesome.  His maternal grandparents were Archibald Eaglesome and Marion Fulton. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, Andrew, Marion, Margaret, Agnes and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 55 in 1873 in Paisley.
