Mary's father was Archibald Thomson and her mother was Katrine Eaglesome. Her maternal grandparents were Archibald Eaglesome and Marion Fulton. She had three brothers and three sisters, named William, James, Andrew, Marion, Margaret and Agnes. She was the third youngest of the seven children. She died at the age of 42 in 1867 in Paisley.
