Robert was born in 1833 in Dunfermline.1 2 Robert's father was Robert Thomson and his mother was Catherine Young. His paternal grandparents were James Thomson and Anne Nisbet. He had two brothers and a sister, named Peter, Charles and Isabella. He was the second oldest of the four children. He had two half-brothers named James and Andrew.-
