Robert's father was James Thomson and his mother was Anne Nisbet. His paternal grandparents were Robert Thomson and Janet Shipherd. He had four brothers and three sisters, named James, Charles, James, John, Mary, Elspet and Janet. James and Robert were twins. He died at the age of 60 on February 15th, 1862 in Dunfermline.
