Charles' father was James Thomson and his mother was Anne Nisbet. His paternal grandparents were Robert Thomson and Janet Shipherd. He had four brothers and three sisters, named James, James, Robert, John, Mary, Elspet and Janet. He died at the age of 66 on January 14th, 1865 in Dunfermline.
