Mary was born on August 26th, 1757 in Uphall. Mary's father was James Thomson and her mother was Isabell Robertson.  Her paternal grandparents were James Thomson and Margaret Aitken. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Archibald, James, Moruis, Elisabeth and Isobell.  She was the second youngest of the six children.
