James was born on July 2nd, 1747 in Uphall. James' father was James Thomson and his mother was Isabell Robertson.  His paternal grandparents were James Thomson and Margaret Aitken. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Archibald, Moruis, Elisabeth, Mary and Isobell.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
