Mary's father was Alexander Thom and her mother was Alison (Elsie) Arbuckle Peat. Her maternal grandparents were Henry Peat and Janet Arbuckle. She had three sisters named Janet, Marion and Isabella. She was the second oldest of the four children. She died at the age of 97 in 2001 in Larkhall.
