Janet's father was Alexander Thom and her mother was Alison (Elsie) Arbuckle Peat. Her maternal grandparents were Henry Peat and Janet Arbuckle. She had three sisters named Mary, Marion and Isabella. She was the oldest of the four children. She died at the age of 83 in 1985 in Strathaven.
