Marion's father was Alexander Thom and her mother was Alison (Elsie) Arbuckle Peat. Her maternal grandparents were Henry Peat and Janet Arbuckle. She had three sisters named Janet, Mary and Isabella. She was the second youngest of the four children. She died at the age of 84 in 1990 in Motherwell.
