James' father was Archibald Steven and his mother was Ann Towers. His maternal grandparents were Michael Towers and Janet Mathie. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, Archibald, Tom, Michael, James, Janet, Agnes and Maggie. He was the youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 69 on February 4th, 1952 in New York City. He was buried in New York City.²²
