Robert's father was James Shaw and his mother was Elizabeth Bunting. His paternal grandparents were James Shaw and Jane Wason. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, David, Catherine, Jeanie and Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 1 in 1891 in Govan.
