David's father was James Shaw and his mother was Elizabeth Bunting. His paternal grandparents were James Shaw and Jane Wason. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Thomas, Catherine, Jeanie and Elizabeth. He was the youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 40 in 1936 in Springburn.²
