Janet's father was James Higgins and her mother was Janet Shaw.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Shaw and Jean Scoffield. She had three brothers and a sister, named James, James, Thomas and Margaret.  She was the second oldest of the five children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, and also three half-siblings of unknown gender, named William, Mary, Jean, <Unknown>, <Unknown> and Shaw.  She died at the age of 33 in 1889 in Monkton.³
