Alexander's father was Robert Shaw and his mother was Janet Wason. His paternal grandparents were James Shaw and Jane Wason; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Wason and Margaret McCrea. He had four brothers and three sisters, named James, Robert, William, Thomas, Mary, Jeanie and Helen. He died at the age of 67 in 1945 in Govan.
