Martha's father was Charles Caldwell Shankland and her mother was Primrose Leal Hanning. Her maternal grandparents were Richard Nathaniel Hanning and Elshie Rennie. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Richard, Elsie and Elizabeth. She was the second youngest of the five children. She died at the age of 93 in March 2016 in Glasgow. The funeral took place on March 10th, 2016 in Glasgow. She was cremated on March 10th, 2016 in Glasgow.¹¹
