Elsie's father was Charles Caldwell Shankland and her mother was Primrose Leal Hanning. Her maternal grandparents were Richard Nathaniel Hanning and Elshie Rennie. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Richard, Martha and Elizabeth. She was the third oldest of the five children. She died at the age of 104 on May 31st, 2018 in Glasgow. The funeral took place on June 8th, 2018 in Glasgow. She was cremated on June 8th, 2018 in Glasgow.²³²
