Elsie's father was Charles Caldwell Shankland and her mother was Primrose Leal Hanning. Her maternal grandparents were Richard Nathaniel Hanning and Elshie Rennie. She had a brother and two sisters, named Richard, Martha and Elizabeth. She was the second oldest of the four children. She died at the age of 104 on May 31st, 2018 in Glasgow. The funeral took place on June 8th, 2018 in Glasgow. She was cremated on June 8th, 2018 in Glasgow.²³²
