John's father was Charles Caldwell Shankland and his mother was Primrose Leal Hanning. His maternal grandparents were Richard Nathaniel Hanning and Elshie Rennie. He had a brother and three sisters, named Richard, Elsie, Martha and Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 62 in 1972 in Glasgow.
