Margaret's father was David Savage and her mother was Maggie Marshall. Her paternal grandparents were Hugh Savage and Margaret Dickson. She had four brothers and three sisters, named David, Hugh, John, Francis, Margaret, Janet and Elspie. She was the oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 3 in 1883 in Dreghorn.
