David's father was David Savage and his mother was Maggie Marshall. His paternal grandparents were Hugh Savage and Margaret Dickson. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Hugh, John, Francis, Margaret, Margaret, Janet and Elspie. He was the third oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 84 on May 5th, 1969 in Falkirk. He was buried in Polmont.
