David's father was John Robertson and his mother was Margaret Park. His paternal grandparents were Thomas John Robertson and Catherine Cameron. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, Thomas, Robert, Catherine and Jane. He was the third youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 18 in 1893 in St. Rollox.
