Elisabeth's father was John Reeder and her mother was Janet Hill Cunningham. Her maternal grandparents were Archibald Cunningham and Elisabeth Anderson. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Archibald, James, John, Robert, Bethania and Jessie. She was the third oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 62 in 1885 in Uphall.
