John's father was Felix Quin and his mother was Annie Young. His paternal grandparents were Felix Quin and Elisabeth McDonald. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Felix, Robert, William, Hugh, Mary and Elizabeth. He was the youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 89 on June 1st, 2002 in Saltcoats.
