James was born in 1890 in Paisley.1 2  James' father was William Pirrie and his mother was Mary Towers.  His maternal grandparents were John Tours and Anne Reid. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Hugh, William, Agnes, Mary and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the six children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Robert, Ann and Jane.  He died from cancer, arcinoma of oesophagus, cardiac failure, at the age of 65 on June 25th, 1955 in Paisley.3
