Hugh was born in 1884 in Paisley.1 2  Hugh's father was William Pirrie and his mother was Mary Towers.  His maternal grandparents were John Tours and Anne Reid. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, James, Agnes, Mary and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Robert, Ann and Jane.  He died at the age of 76 in 1960 in Arbroath.
