Mary's father was John Sorety Muir and her mother was Barbara Morton. Her paternal grandparents were William Muir and Mary McDonald. She had two brothers and a sister, named William, John and Barbara. She was the second oldest of the four children. She died at the age of 58 in 1960 in Kilmarnock.
