Barbara's father was John Sorety Muir and her mother was Barbara Morton. Her paternal grandparents were William Muir and Mary McDonald. She had two brothers and a sister, named William, John and Mary. She was the oldest of the four children. She died at the age of 71 in 1970 in Glasgow.
