Charles' father was Charles McDonald Muir and his mother was Mary McAvoy. His paternal grandparents were William Muir and Mary McDonald. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Annie and Mary. He was the second oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 54 in 1955 in Ayr.
