Sarah's father was James Mitchell and her mother was Janet Hamilton Osborn. Her maternal grandparents were Robert Osborn and Mary Frazer Hamilton. She had three brothers and three sisters, named George, Robert, William, Maggie, Mary and Janet. She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
