George's father was James Mitchell and his mother was Janet Hamilton Osborn. His maternal grandparents were Robert Osborn and Mary Frazer Hamilton. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Robert, William, Maggie, Mary, Sarah and Janet. He was the second oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 29 in 1911 in Alloway.
