Robert's father was James Mitchell and his mother was Janet Hamilton Osborn. His maternal grandparents were Robert Osborn and Mary Frazer Hamilton. He had two brothers and four sisters, named George, William, Maggie, Mary, Sarah and Janet. He was the third youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 57 in 1945 in Ardrossan.
