John's father was Robert McPike and his mother was Elizabeth Robertson. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Morrison McPike and Agnes McTaggart Mcclelland; his maternal grandparents were John Robertson and Agnes Gourlay. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Richard, Jeanie, Rachel, Marion and Agnes. He was the third oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 78 in 1974 in Ayr.
