Jonathan's father was David McMurran and his mother was Allison McClymont.  His paternal grandparents were Jonathon McMurren and Susan McAllan. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, William, Anne, Susanah and Elisabeth.  He was the youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 26 in 1885 in Kilmarnock.
