David's father was Jonathon McMurren and his mother was Susan McAllan. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, Allan, Jonathan, Ann, Helen and Susanna.  He was the second youngest of the seven children. He had two half-brothers named Samuel and William.  He died due to a respiratory problem and/or pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, duration 4 months, at the age of 67 on April 2nd, 1889 in Kilmarnock.³
