Archibald's father was John McLellan and his mother was Agnes Turner.  His maternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. He had four brothers and a sister, named John, Alexander, Peter, Richard and Janet.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 34 in 1876 in Strathblane.²
