Alexander's father was John McLellan and his mother was Agnes Turner.  His maternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. He had four brothers and a sister, named Archibald, John, Peter, Richard and Janet.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 85 in 1930 in Airdrie.
