James' father was Donald McLean and his mother was Janet Marshall McLellan. His maternal grandparents were John McLellan and Agnes Turner. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Donald, Agnes, Janne Eliza, Grace, Donaldina and Agnes. He was the third youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 67 in 1946 in Urray.
