John was born in 1828 in Ayrshire.1 2 John's father was William McLatchie and his mother was Janet Dalzell. His paternal grandparents were Hugh McLatchie and Agnes Reid. He had three brothers and a sister, named Hugh, William, Robert and Agnes. He was the second oldest of the five children.-
