Robert's father was John Lafferty and his mother was Jane Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Lafferty and Margaret French. He had four brothers and a sister, named Joseph, John, Joseph, Malcolm and Jane.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Peter and Margaret.  He died at the age of 46 in 1930 in Edinburgh.
