Malcolm's father was John Lafferty and his mother was Jane Smith. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Lafferty and Margaret French. He had four brothers and a sister, named Joseph, John, Robert, Joseph and Jane. He was the youngest of the six children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Peter and Margaret.
