Phemey's father was Walter Knox and her mother was Agnes Towers. Her maternal grandparents were Michael Towers and Janet Mathie. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Walter, Walter, Bill, Janet, Margaret and Maggie. She was the third oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 41 in 1905 in Paisley.
