Mary's father was George Johnston and her mother was Barbara Scott Stark. Her paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Ann Hardie Dick. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, James, George, David, Annabella, Elizabeth and Barbara. She was the oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 35 in 1907 in Perth.³
