John's father was John Johnston and his mother was Ann Hardie Dick. His paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Isabella Baxter; his maternal grandparents were David Dick and Janet Grant. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Andrew, David, Robert, George, James, Janet and Isabella. He was the oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 60 on September 3rd, 1897 in Bo'ness.³
