Hamilton was born in 1821 in Shotts.1 2  Hamilton's father was Rev George Hill and her mother was Margaret Marshall.  Her paternal grandparents were Rev George Hill and Ann Hamilton; her maternal grandparents were James Marshall and Elizabeth Hamilton. She had three brothers and four sisters, named George, William, John, Margaret, Agnes, Anne and Anne.  She died at the age of 77 on March 2nd, 1898 in Airdrie.  She was buried in Dunblane.
