John's father was Thomas Hardie and his mother was Mary Turner.  His maternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. He had a brother and five sisters, named Alexander, Jessie, Helen, Mary, Margaret and Agnes.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
