Alexander's father was Thomas Hardie and his mother was Mary Turner.  His maternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. He had a brother and five sisters, named John, Jessie, Helen, Mary, Margaret and Agnes.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 74 in 1911 in Greenock.
