Helen's father was Thomas Hardie and her mother was Mary Turner.  Her maternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Alexander, John, Jessie, Mary, Margaret and Agnes.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
