Margaret's father was Thomas Galt and her mother was Mary Gillespie. Her paternal grandparents were William Galt and Margaret Towers. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, Elizabeth and Mary. She was the second oldest of the five children. She died at the age of 79 in 1966 in Paisley.
