Janet's father was Archibald Galloway and her mother was Janet Galbraith.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Galloway and Helen McLauchlan. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Archibald, James, John, George, Mary, Ellen, Janet and Margaret.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
